Upgrading a blank Logistics Tablet Database is only required if using Framework Logistics Tablet
Insula Software provides clients with a blank Framework Logistics Tablet database. To keep your Framework Logistics Tablet database up-to-date, the blank database must be upgraded. This upgraded database will become the company wide Framework Logistics Tablet blank database.
The following procedure explains the process of upgrading the blank database.
Pre-Requisites
The following is a list of applications that must be installed and/or configured on the computer system upgrading the Framework Logistics Tablet blank database:
Microsoft SQL Server (MSSQL 2008 to MSSQL 2017)
Configured Microsoft SQL Server Security
Microsoft SQL Native Client
Upgrade Checklist
The following steps are required to upgrade a blank Framework Logistics Tablet database.
Step 1 - Restore Framework Logistics Tablet Blank Database
Restores a Framework Logistics Tablet blank database.
- The following database restoration is based on Insula Software's recommended settings.
- This can be performed on any computer system
Copy - Blank Database To Computer System
Open Windows Explorer.
Browse to: [fw folder]\Service\01- Default Data\
Copy the blank database file.
e.g. FworkSQLCstLTabletXX.bakOn the computer system, paste the blank database to a local folder.
e.g, C:\Framework\
Restore Database - Framework Logistics Tablet
Open Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio (Start > All Programs > Microsoft SQL Server > SQL Server Management Studio).
Connect to the required server.
Right-click on Databases and click Restore Database.... The Restore Database dialog will be displayed.
In the To Databases field, enter the Framework Logistics Tablet blank database name.
e.g.FworkSQLCstLTablet_BlankIn the From Device field, click the Browse button. The Specify Backup dialog will be displayed.
Click the Add button. The Locate Backup File dialog will be displayed.
Browse to the folder location of the backup file.
e.g. C:\Framework\Select the backup file.
e.g. FworkSQLCstLTabletXX.bak.Click the OK button. The Locate Backup File dialog will close.
Click the OK button. The Specify Backup dialog will close.
In the Restore column, tick the backup to be restored.
Select the Options tab.
In the Restore the database file as list, click the Browse button for the Framework Logistics Tablet database (e.g., FworkSQLCstLTablet). The Locate Database Files dialog will be displayed.
OR
Use the default file location.Select the folder location where the database will be restored to.
e.g. C:\Framework\In the File Name field, enter the file name: FworkSQLCstLTablet_Blank.mdf
Click the OK button.
In the Restore the database file as list, click the Browse button for the Framework Logistics Tablet database log (i.e., FworkSQLCstLTablet_log). TheLocate Database Files dialog will be displayed.
OR
Use the default file location.Select the folder location where the database will be restored to.
e.g. C:\Framework\In the File Name field, enter the file name: FworkSQLCstLTablet_log.ldf
Click the OK button.
Click the OK button. The database restoration will be performed.
Close Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio.
Step 2 - ODBC DSN Configurations
Provides the computer system with a connection to the Framework Logistics Tablet database.
Microsoft 64-Bit Operating Systems include two ODBC Data Source Administrator executable files. Depending on the operating system, use the following to open the correct ODBC Data Source:
On 32-Bit Operating Systems: Use either:
Start Menu > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Data Sources (ODBC)
OR
\\%SystemRoot%\system32\odbcad32.exe (e.g., C:\Windows\system32\odbcad32.exe).
On 64-Bit Operating System: Use:
\\%SystemRoot%\SysWOW64\odbcad32.exe (e.g., C:\Windows\SysWOW64\odbcad32.exe).
ODBC DSN Configuration - Framework Logistics Tablet
Open Data Sources (ODBC).
Select the System DSN tab.
Click the Add button. The Create New Data Source dialog will be displayed.
Select SQL Server Native Client XX.0.
Click the Finish button. The Create a New Data Source to SQL Server dialog will be displayed.
Enter the following details:
Name: FworkSQLCstLTablet_Blank
Description (optional): Enter a description for the database connection. For example, Framework Logistics Tablet Blank Database.
Server: Select the SQL server from the Server drop-down list.
OR
Enter the SQL Server name.
Click the Next button.
Click the Next button.
Tick: Change the default database to
From the drop-down list select the required database.
e.g. FworkSQLCstTablet_BlankClick the Next button.
Click the Finish button. The ODBC Microsoft SQL Server Setup dialog will be displayed.
Click the Test Data Source... button.
If successful, click the OK button.
Click the OK button. The ODBC Microsoft SQL Server Setup dialog will close.
Click the OK button. The Data Sources (ODBC) Administrator dialog will close.
Step 3 - Upgrade Framework Logistics Tablet Database
The following procedure upgrades the Framework Logistics Tablet blank database.
If during the upgrade process 'Not Responding' appears in the title bar of the Framework Logistics Tablet Upgrade software, this is due to the system performing very long and CPU-intensive calculations. This message will disappear once the upgrade has been completed
The Framework Logistics Tablet database upgrade can be performed either manually or silently. The manual upgrade option requires user intervention and selections whilst the silent upgrade option, which uses a command line switch, requires no user intervention and is therefore useful for group policy rollouts across multiple computer systems. Both manual and silent installation options are included.
Manual Framework Logistics Tablet Database Upgrade
On the system that is running Framework Logistics Tablet:
Open Windows Explorer.
Browse to: \[fw folder]\Upgrade\Upgrade7_0_0_[xx]\ECM\
Double-click the FworkCstLTabletUpgrade.exe file. The Upgrade Tablet Database prompt will appear.
Click the Yes button. The database upgrade will be performed.
The first step in the upgrade procedure will take a backup of the upgraded tables and store the tables in a Microsoft Access database file (backup.mdb). This will be stored under a time-stamped folder indicating the date and time of the upgrade. For example, Backup 20100404_105719. This folder can be deleted once the upgrade has been completedIf the upgrade was successful you will receive a successfully completed message.
Click the OK button.
Click the Close button.
Silent Framework Logistics Tablet Database Upgrade
On the system that is running Framework Logistics Tablet:
Open Windows Explorer.
Browse to: \[fw folder]\Upgrade\Upgrade7_0_0_[xx]\ECM\
Right-click on FworkCstLTabletUpgrade.exe and select Create Shortcut. A shortcut to the executable will be created.
Right-click on the new shortcut and select Properties. The Properties dialog will be displayed.
On the Shortcut tab, edit the Target field and include the command line switch -s at the end of the line. The target should look similar to the following:
"\[fw folder]\Upgrade\Upgrade7_0_0_[xx]\FworkCstLTabletUpgrade.exe" -sClick the OK button. The Properties dialog will close.
After creating a new shortcut with the command line switch, run the database upgrade using the new shortcut.
Open Windows Explorer.
Browse to: \[fw folder]\Upgrade\Upgrade7_0_0_[xx]\ECM\
Double-click the newly created shortcut file.
The silent database upgrade will be performed.
Unsuccessful Database Upgrade
If the database was unsuccessful, restore the backup database file. Refer to your Microsoft SQL Server documentation for more information.
Step 4 - Backup Framework Logistics Tablet Database
This MUST be performed on the system(s) that host a Framework Logistics Tablet database.
Creates a backup of the upgraded Framework Logistics Tablet blank database to be used as the default database that will be upgraded for the next major version ofFramework Logistics Tablet.
Backup - Framework Logistics Tablet Database
Open SQL Server Management Studio (Start > All Programs > Microsoft SQL Server > SQL Server Management Studio).
Connect to the required server.
In the Object Explorer pane, expand: [server name] > Databases
Right-click on the Framework Logistics Tablet database (e.g., FworkSQLCstLTablet) and select Tasks > Back Up. The Back Up Database (General Page)dialog will be displayed.
Specify a Name and Destination for the backup file, if different from the default name and destination details.
Write down the name and destination details.
Select the Options page.
Tick: Overwrite all existing backup sets
Tick: Verify backup when finished
Click the OK button. The backup will be performed to the selected destination.
Click the OK button to close the message prompt.
Close SQL Server Management Studio.
Browse to the backup location (as detailed in Point 5 above).
Copy the backup file to a secure location.
A typical example is to backup the database file (.bak file) to the following folder location: [fw folder]\Service\01- Default Data\
