For a user to be able to view/work with documents, we use permissions. There are two main levels of security permissions used in the DMS.

In the Administration > Document Structures screen, you can define which ALM DMS - Contact Roles can actually view the structure.
In the screen, you can turn on or off whether permission is required to access anything to do with the structure.

When ticked, you can then tick the Contact Roles that can view the structure.
